Although much of the available economic information is anecdotal, PDD ranks among the most costly diseases currently impacting the dairy industry. An economic model has been developed using trial data and published information regarding PDD. This model estimates costs involved with PDD and the relative cost-effectiveness of the Serpens Species Bacterin. Typically, the greatest costs associated with PDD exist in losses due to decreased milk production, increased death/culling, and decreased reproductive efficiency. Treatment expenditures (bandaging, footbaths, etc.) account for less than five percent of PDD associated losses. The model demonstrates a typical return on investment from vaccination with Serpens Species Bacterin to be 200-300 percent.
